The Dafins School represents
the first solar school and the first public solar building in Austria.
(Otto Kapfinger in "Baukunst in Vorarlberg seit 1980")
Building Description
The Dafins School is a small elementary school with a
kindergarten and a gymnasium. The main building is a wooden construction,
whereas the gymnasium of concrete dug in under the playground with windows
facing west. The two building parts have quite different degrees of
exposure to the ambient, but receive solar and auxiliary heat from the
same system. The solar air heating system comprises a solar air collector,
a rock storage unit, a hypocaust system, and an integrated auxiliary heat
source. The warm air is circulated within the system without having any
contact with room air. The system variation, which was implied in this
building, belongs to one of the more complex solar air systems of its kind.
